What are Fillers?

Are you looking to take years off of your face instantly? Dermal fillers are injections used to smooth facial lines, plump wrinkles, and add volume to the face. Dr Pearlman is in the class of being coined a Master Injector, having travelled the globe to teach and be taught some of the most advanced techniques available, you can rest assured she is the provider who injects these facial contouring fillers around the mouth, nose, and eyes, providing instant results lasting months to years for a noticeable difference.

People choose this treatment to gain a more youthful appearance or to enhance existing facial features, making them look even more beautiful. Treatments are half an hour in duration with minimal recovery time. Results are witnessed immediately and will last months to years. How long the fillers last depends on the injection site and the filler type.

Different Types

Dr Pearlman uses the top brands on the market that are health Canada approved for safety and efficacy, meaning they are safe to be injected and will work for what they are intended to treat. We do not use one brand of filler, we use all brands of filler to achieve your desired result. The product selection is generally determined at the time of the consultation with Dr Pearlman.

Other off-the-shelf fillers are the following:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

This filler contains a naturally occurring skin acid. It provides volume to the skin while keeping it hydrated. As we age, the body stops producing hyaluronic acid—results from these injections typically last six months to one year. The most commonly used filler is Restylane.
Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)

Poly-L-lactic acid assists the body in generating collagen. Healthcare professionals use it to smooth deep wrinkles in the face, with results lasting two or more years. Types of fillers are Sculptra.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

This dermal filler injection contains a substance found in the bones. Results from this injection last one year and are used to fill deep wrinkles. An example of this filler type is Radiesse.
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

Polymethylmethacrylate fillers contain collagen. When using this filler, your healthcare provider injects tiny balls that remain under the skin. The balls provide facial contouring, generating volume and keeping the skin firm. One type of PMMA filler is Bellafill.

During your consultation, your healthcare provider discusses your available options. They will go over your goals and which choice is right for you. You can also discuss your expectations and what result you expect to see afterwards.

As safe as fillers are, there are risks associated with the cosmetic procedure. These risks include bleeding, bruising, and infection. However, the majority of patients don’t experience any adverse effects.

Benefits of Facial Fillers

Clients love using facial fillers because they enhance their appearance and increase youthfulness. The treatment is quick and relatively painless, with minimal downtime. Furthermore, most people experience immediate results.

Minimal Risk

Compared to other treatments, fillers pose minimal risk to the patient. If any side effects occur, they are mild and dissipate within days.

Easy Treatment

Facial fillers are injected into the skin using fine needles and local anesthetics. Pain is minimal despite the procedure being well-tolerated by most clients. If you experience further discomfort, you can use numbing creams.

Long-Lasting

Many dermal filling injections fade in three to four months before requiring maintenance. Facial contour injections last 6-12 months before a follow-up is necessary.

What to Expect During Your Filler Procedure

Before fillers are injected into your skin, you will attend a consultation with a skin expert. During your consultation, we will take the time to understand what your goals are, answer your questions, and assess your skin to create the most customized plan to get you the results you're looking for.

Dr Pearlman may mark your face using a marker or pen to note where they will insert the injections. You can expect to have a number of photos taken at all different angles and expressions, this allows us to see your expression in a relaxed state and dynamic.

During your initial consultation, your provider will inquire about your medical history. You must inform them whether you are taking any medications. This information is essential as some drugs may increase potential complications after receiving fillers. Notify your professional if you have any:

  • History of bleeding or bruising after similar treatments

  • Allergies

  • Skin conditions

  • Neurological issues

First, Your skin is cleansed, and your provider will apply a lotion/cream with an anesthetic. The anesthetic numbs the site, so treatments are comfortable.

The provider injects tiny amounts of filler under the skin with a thin needle. The facial contouring injection may sting or pinch, but clients don’t experience much pain. Your provider may inject fillers into several areas. This entire procedure can take only a few minutes to one hour.

After they are done, your skin is cleansed, and an ice pack is provided to ease swelling/pain. There may be bruises, discomfort, or swelling. However, the side effects are mild and dissipate within a few days.

Results are seen immediately for most patients. However, each person’s results are different. The duration to see visible results and how long they last depends on various factors, including treatment type.

Guidelines to Ensure Optimal Results

Generally, treatments are tolerable. Clients should refrain from touching, rubbing, washing, or massaging the area for four hours. Do not do strenuous exercise (high-intensity workouts and heavy lifting) for one or two weeks. It may trigger bruising. Other tips to ensure optimal results are as follows:

Avoid Alcohol/Blood Thinners

Clients should avoid alcohol or blood thinners 24-48 hours after their treatments to prevent bruising.

Avoid MakeUp and Sunscreen

Patients can gently apply light makeup and sunscreen 90 minutes after receiving injections. However, professionals advise refraining from using makeup on the treated area for 24 hours to allow the skin to recover.

Avoid Intense Heat

Patients should avoid going into hot tubs, engaging in hot yoga, tanning, massages, and facials on the treatment day.

Avoid Active Products

While you can resume normal skin care immediately after treatment, avoid products containing Alpha Hydroxy Acid/Glycolic, Retinol, or Beta Hydroxy Acid for one day. The active ingredients in these products can aggravate your injection site.

Some firmness (depending on the product) may exist as the filler is a jelly-like implant. However, it will resolve within two weeks.

After treatment, most clients experience nominal discomfort or symptoms. However, if you experience severe/increasing pain, the treatment area is hot to touch, or there is increasing redness, notify your provider. Also, inform us if you have blanching in your treated area, blotchy discolouration, fever, or chills.
